- 1/2 teaspoon salt (for frosting)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)
- 1/4 cup heavy cream (for frosting)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Mix well.
- Add the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes until well combined.
- Stir in the boiling water until the batter is smooth (the batter will be thin).
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then remove from pans and transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
- For the frosting, beat the softened butter in a mixing bowl until creamy. Gradually add the powdered sugar and cocoa powder, mixing on low speed until combined.
- Add the salt, vanilla extract, and heavy cream. Beat on high speed for 3 minutes until the frosting is light and fluffy.
- Once the cakes are completely cooled, place one layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of frosting on top.
- Place the second cake layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, add a teaspoon of espresso powder to the batter.
- For a fun twist, incorporate chocolate chips into the batter before baking.
