Description

Champurrado is a traditional Mexican hot chocolate drink made with masa harina, milk, and dark chocolate, perfect for cozying up on a chilly day.


Ingredients

  • 2 cups water
  • 1 cup masa harina
  • 4 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate (Mexican chocolate preferred)
  • 1/2 cup sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, bring 2 cups of water to a boil.
  2. In a separate bowl, mix the masa harina with 1 cup of cold water until smooth.
  3. Once the water is boiling, slowly whisk in the masa harina mixture to avoid lumps.
  4. Continue to cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, for about 5 minutes until it thickens.
  5. Add the milk, dark chocolate, sugar, cinnamon, and salt to the saucepan. Stir until the chocolate is melted and everything is well combined.
  6. Cook for an additional 5-10 minutes, stirring frequently, until the champurrado reaches your desired thickness.
  7. If using, stir in the vanilla extract just before serving.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, substitute half of the milk with evaporated milk.
  • Add a pinch of cayenne pepper for a spicy kick or top with whipped cream for extra indulgence.
