Description
Champurrado is a traditional Mexican hot chocolate drink made with masa harina, milk, and dark chocolate, perfect for cozying up on a chilly day.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups water
- 1 cup masa harina
- 4 cups milk
- 1/2 cup dark chocolate (Mexican chocolate preferred)
- 1/2 cup sugar (adjust to taste)
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, bring 2 cups of water to a boil.
- In a separate bowl, mix the masa harina with 1 cup of cold water until smooth.
- Once the water is boiling, slowly whisk in the masa harina mixture to avoid lumps.
- Continue to cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, for about 5 minutes until it thickens.
- Add the milk, dark chocolate, sugar, cinnamon, and salt to the saucepan. Stir until the chocolate is melted and everything is well combined.
- Cook for an additional 5-10 minutes, stirring frequently, until the champurrado reaches your desired thickness.
- If using, stir in the vanilla extract just before serving.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, substitute half of the milk with evaporated milk.
- Add a pinch of cayenne pepper for a spicy kick or top with whipped cream for extra indulgence.
