Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup water
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 4 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup chopped pecans
- 1 cup caramel sauce
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter (for frosting)
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (for frosting)
- 1/4 cup milk (for frosting)
- 3 cups powdered sugar (for frosting)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease a 13×18-inch baking sheet or pan.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt.
- In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the butter, water, and cocoa powder. Stir until the butter is melted and the mixture is smooth. Remove from heat.
- Pour the chocolate mixture into the dry ingredients and mix until combined.
- Add the buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla extract to the batter. Mix until smooth.
- Fold in the chopped pecans.
- Pour the batter into the prepared baking sheet and spread evenly. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- While the cake is baking, prepare the fudge frosting. In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the cocoa powder and milk until combined.
- Remove from heat and whisk in the powdered sugar and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Once the cake is done, remove it from the oven and let it cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. Drizzle the caramel sauce over the warm cake, then pour the fudge frosting on top, spreading it evenly.
- Let the cake cool completely before slicing into squares.
Notes
- For an extra layer of flavor, try adding a sprinkle of sea salt on top of the fudge frosting.
- You can substitute walnuts for pecans if you prefer a different nut.
- For a richer taste, consider adding a splash of coffee to the fudge frosting.
