Description
A delicious and hearty Shepherd’s Pie Tater Tot Casserole that combines ground meat, mixed vegetables, and crispy tater tots, topped with melted cheddar cheese.

- 1 pound ground beef or lamb
- 1 medium onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 cups frozen mixed vegetables (peas, carrots, corn)
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 cups beef broth
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water (optional, for thickening)
- 4 cups frozen tater tots
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 400°F.
- In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef or lamb until browned. Drain excess fat if necessary.
- Add the diced onion and minced garlic, cooking until the onion is translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
- Stir in the frozen mixed vegetables, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper.
- Pour in the beef broth and bring to a simmer.
- If you prefer a thicker filling, stir in the cornstarch mixture and cook until the sauce thickens, about 2-3 minutes.
- Transfer the meat and vegetable mixture to a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Evenly spread the frozen tater tots over the top of the meat mixture.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the tater tots are golden brown and crispy.
- Remove from the oven and sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the top.
- Return to the oven for an additional 5 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Let the casserole cool for a few minutes before serving.
Notes
- For added flavor, consider mixing in a tablespoon of tomato paste with the meat mixture.
- You can substitute the ground meat with turkey or a plant-based alternative for a lighter version.
