- 1 ½ cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
- ½ cup unsalted butter
- 4 large eggs, separated
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup heavy whipping cream
- ¼ cup powdered sugar
- Pinch of salt
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan and line the bottom with parchment paper for easy removal.
- In a medium saucepan, melt the chocolate chips and butter over low heat, stirring until smooth. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
- In a large bowl, whisk the egg yolks and granulated sugar together until pale and creamy. Stir in the melted chocolate mixture and vanilla extract until well combined.
- In another bowl, beat the egg whites with a pinch of salt until stiff peaks form. Gently fold the egg whites into the chocolate mixture until no white streaks remain.
- Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the cake is set but still slightly soft in the center. Remove from the oven and let cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
- While the cake cools, whip the heavy cream and powdered sugar in a mixing bowl until soft peaks form.
- Once the cake is completely cool, spread the whipped cream over the top of the cake. Optionally, you can garnish with chocolate shavings or fresh berries.
- Chill the cake in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour before serving to allow the flavors to meld.
Notes
- For a coffee flavor, add 1 tablespoon of instant coffee granules to the melted chocolate mixture.
- To make it gluten-free, ensure that the chocolate chips and any other ingredients used are certified gluten-free.
