Description

A quick and easy recipe for General Tso Chicken that can be prepared in just 30 minutes, perfect for a weeknight dinner.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups boneless, skinless chicken thighs, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, minced
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (adjust to taste)
  • 2 green onions, sliced (for garnish)
  • Cooked white rice (for serving)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, toss the chicken pieces with cornstarch until evenly coated. Shake off any excess cornstarch.
  2. Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the chicken in a single layer and cook for about 5-7 minutes, turning occasionally, until golden brown and cooked through. Remove the chicken from the skillet and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, add the garlic, ginger, and red pepper flakes. Sauté for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
  4. In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, rice vinegar, sugar, hoisin sauce, and sesame oil. Pour this sauce into the skillet and bring to a simmer.
  5. Return the cooked chicken to the skillet and toss to coat in the sauce. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until heated through.
  6. Serve the General Tso chicken over cooked white rice and garnish with sliced green onions.

Notes

  • For a crispier chicken, double fry the chicken pieces by frying them once, removing them to drain, and then frying them again for a few minutes before adding to the sauce.
  • For a vegetarian version, substitute the chicken with tofu and adjust cooking times accordingly.
