Description

Indulge in a delightful Overnight Crème Brûlée French Toast, perfect for a special breakfast or brunch.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 slices of thick-cut brioche or challah bread
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar (for topping)
  • Fresh berries (for serving, optional)
  • Powdered sugar (for serving, optional)

Instructions

  1. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray. Arrange the slices of brioche or challah in a single layer in the dish. You can cut the slices in half if needed to fit.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
  3. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread slices, ensuring all pieces are soaked. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight (or at least 4 hours) to allow the bread to absorb the custard.
  4. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove the plastic wrap from the baking dish.
  5. Bake the French toast for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the custard is set.
  6. Once baked, remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes. Sprinkle the brown sugar evenly over the top.
  7. Using a kitchen torch, carefully caramelize the brown sugar until it forms a crispy, golden crust. If you don’t have a torch, you can place the dish under the broiler for 1-2 minutes, watching closely to prevent burning.
  8. Serve warm, topped with fresh berries and a dusting of powdered sugar if desired.

Notes

  • For a chocolate twist, add chocolate chips between the layers of bread before soaking.
  • For a fruitier version, layer sliced bananas or strawberries between the bread slices for added flavor and texture.
