- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

- 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1/2 cup molasses
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup chopped nuts (walnuts or almonds)
- 1/2 cup chocolate chips (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, ginger, and cloves until well combined.
- In another bowl, cream the softened butter until smooth. Add the molasses, egg, and vanilla extract, mixing until fully incorporated.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, stirring until just combined. Fold in the chopped nuts and chocolate chips, if using.
- Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread it evenly.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Allow the Magenbrot to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Once cooled, cut into squares or rectangles and serve.
Notes
- For a spicier flavor, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or increase the amount of ginger and cinnamon.
- Substitute the nuts with dried fruits like raisins or cranberries for a different texture and taste.
