Description

Jalapeño-Onion Smash Burgers are a delicious and bold-flavored burger option featuring juicy beef patties, sautéed onions, and spicy jalapeños, topped with melted cheddar cheese.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 fresh jalapeños, sliced (seeds removed for less heat, if desired)
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • Optional toppings: lettuce, tomato, pickles, mayonnaise, or your favorite condiments

Instructions

  1. Preheat a large skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Add the vegetable oil and let it heat up.
  2. While the skillet is heating, form the ground beef into four equal balls, about 4 ounces each. Do not overwork the meat; keep it loose.
  3. Once the skillet is hot, add the onion slices and jalapeños. Sauté for about 3-4 minutes until they are softened and slightly caramelized. Remove them from the skillet and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, place the beef balls and immediately smash them down with a spatula to form thin patties. Season with salt and pepper. Cook for about 3-4 minutes until the edges are crispy.
  5. Flip the patties and immediately place a slice of cheddar cheese on each one. Cook for another 2-3 minutes until the cheese is melted and the burgers are cooked to your desired doneness.
  6. Toast the hamburger buns in the skillet for about 1-2 minutes until golden brown.
  7. Assemble the burgers by placing the cheesy patties on the bottom half of each bun. Top with the sautéed onions and jalapeños, and add any additional toppings you prefer. Place the top half of the bun on each burger and serve immediately.

Notes

  • For a smoky flavor, add a teaspoon of smoked paprika to the ground beef before forming the patties.
  • If you prefer a milder burger, substitute the jalapeños with roasted red peppers or omit them altogether.
