- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup powdered sugar (for glaze)
- 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder (for glaze)
- 2 tablespoons milk (for glaze)
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (for glaze)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a donut pan.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, granulated sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
- In another bowl, mix the buttermilk, vegetable oil, egg, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Do not overmix.
- Spoon the batter into the prepared donut pan, filling each cavity about 2/3 full.
- Bake for 10-12 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow the donuts to cool in the pan for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack.
- While the donuts cool, prepare the glaze by whisking together the powdered sugar, cocoa powder, milk, and vanilla extract in a small bowl until smooth.
- Once the donuts are completely cool, dip the tops into the glaze and allow the excess to drip off. Place the glazed donuts back on the wire rack to set.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, add a pinch of espresso powder to the batter.
- You can substitute the buttermilk with regular milk mixed with a teaspoon of vinegar for a similar effect.
- For a fun twist, try adding chocolate chips to the batter before baking.
