Description

A delicious homemade version of General Tso’s Chicken that is better than takeout, featuring crispy chicken pieces coated in a flavorful sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken thighs, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 cup cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil (for frying)
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup rice vinegar
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 1 tablespoon minced ginger
  • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (adjust to taste)
  • 2 green onions, sliced (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt, and black pepper.
  2. Dredge the chicken pieces in the flour mixture, shaking off any excess.
  3. Dip the floured chicken into the beaten eggs, then coat with cornstarch, pressing gently to adhere.
  4. In a large skillet or wok, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat.
  5. Once hot, add the chicken in batches, frying until golden brown and cooked through, about 4-5 minutes per batch.
  6. Remove the chicken and place it on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  7. In a separate saucepan, combine soy sauce, rice vinegar, sugar, hoisin sauce, sesame oil, garlic, ginger, and red pepper flakes.
  8. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves and the sauce thickens slightly, about 3-4 minutes.
  9. Add the fried chicken to the sauce, tossing to coat evenly.
  10. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes to heat through.
  11. Serve hot, garnished with sliced green onions.

Notes

  • For extra crunch, consider adding a handful of toasted sesame seeds on top before serving.
  • You can substitute chicken thighs with chicken breasts for a leaner option.
  • For a vegetarian version, replace chicken with tofu and follow the same preparation steps.
