Description
A delicious homemade version of General Tso’s Chicken that is better than takeout, featuring crispy chicken pieces coated in a flavorful sauce.

- 2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken thighs, cut into bite-sized pieces
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 large eggs, beaten
- 1 cup cornstarch
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil (for frying)
- 1/2 cup soy sauce
- 1/4 cup rice vinegar
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 1 tablespoon minced garlic
- 1 tablespoon minced ginger
- 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (adjust to taste)
- 2 green onions, sliced (for garnish)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt, and black pepper.
- Dredge the chicken pieces in the flour mixture, shaking off any excess.
- Dip the floured chicken into the beaten eggs, then coat with cornstarch, pressing gently to adhere.
- In a large skillet or wok, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat.
- Once hot, add the chicken in batches, frying until golden brown and cooked through, about 4-5 minutes per batch.
- Remove the chicken and place it on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
- In a separate saucepan, combine soy sauce, rice vinegar, sugar, hoisin sauce, sesame oil, garlic, ginger, and red pepper flakes.
- Bring to a simmer over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves and the sauce thickens slightly, about 3-4 minutes.
- Add the fried chicken to the sauce, tossing to coat evenly.
- Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes to heat through.
- Serve hot, garnished with sliced green onions.
Notes
- For extra crunch, consider adding a handful of toasted sesame seeds on top before serving.
- You can substitute chicken thighs with chicken breasts for a leaner option.
- For a vegetarian version, replace chicken with tofu and follow the same preparation steps.
