Description
Elephant Ears are a delicious sweet treat made from a simple dough, fried until golden brown, and coated in cinnamon sugar.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 large egg
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar (for coating)
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon (for coating)
- Vegetable oil (for frying)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, 1 tablespoon sugar, salt, and baking powder.
- In another bowl, mix the milk, egg, melted butter, and vanilla extract until well combined.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until a dough forms.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently for about 1 minute until smooth.
- Roll the dough out into a large rectangle, about 1/4 inch thick.
- Cut the dough into heart or oval shapes, about 4-6 inches wide.
- In a deep skillet or frying pan, heat about 1 inch of vegetable oil over medium heat until it reaches 350°F.
- Carefully place the dough shapes in the hot oil, frying a few at a time to avoid overcrowding.
- Fry for about 2-3 minutes on each side or until golden brown.
- Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
- In a shallow dish, mix together the 1/2 cup sugar and cinnamon.
- While the elephant ears are still warm, coat them in the cinnamon-sugar mixture.
- Serve warm, and enjoy!
Notes
- For a chocolate twist, drizzle melted chocolate over the cooled elephant ears.
- Try adding a pinch of nutmeg or cardamom to the cinnamon-sugar mixture for an extra flavor boost.
