Description

Elephant Ears are a delicious sweet treat made from a simple dough, fried until golden brown, and coated in cinnamon sugar.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (for coating)
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon (for coating)
  • Vegetable oil (for frying)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, 1 tablespoon sugar, salt, and baking powder.
  2. In another bowl, mix the milk, egg, melted butter, and vanilla extract until well combined.
  3. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until a dough forms.
  4. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently for about 1 minute until smooth.
  5. Roll the dough out into a large rectangle, about 1/4 inch thick.
  6. Cut the dough into heart or oval shapes, about 4-6 inches wide.
  7. In a deep skillet or frying pan, heat about 1 inch of vegetable oil over medium heat until it reaches 350°F.
  8. Carefully place the dough shapes in the hot oil, frying a few at a time to avoid overcrowding.
  9. Fry for about 2-3 minutes on each side or until golden brown.
  10. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  11. In a shallow dish, mix together the 1/2 cup sugar and cinnamon.
  12. While the elephant ears are still warm, coat them in the cinnamon-sugar mixture.
  13. Serve warm, and enjoy!

Notes

  • For a chocolate twist, drizzle melted chocolate over the cooled elephant ears.
  • Try adding a pinch of nutmeg or cardamom to the cinnamon-sugar mixture for an extra flavor boost.
