Classic Italian Tiramisu is a heavenly coffee delight that combines layers of coffee-soaked ladyfingers with a rich mascarpone cheese mixture, topped with cocoa powder and optional dark chocolate shavings.

- 2 cups strong brewed coffee, cooled
- 1/2 cup coffee liqueur (optional)
- 3 large eggs, separated
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 cups mascarpone cheese (at room temperature)
- 1 1/2 cups heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 24 ladyfinger cookies (savoiardi)
- Cocoa powder, for dusting
- Dark chocolate shavings, for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Pour the cooled coffee into a shallow dish and mix in the coffee liqueur if using. Set aside.
- In a mixing bowl, whisk the egg yolks with the sugar until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes.
- Incorporate the mascarpone cheese into the egg yolk mixture, stirring until smooth.
- Beat the egg whites in another bowl until stiff peaks form, then gently fold into the mascarpone mixture.
- Whip the heavy cream with the vanilla extract until soft peaks form, then fold into the mascarpone mixture until well blended.
- Quickly dip each ladyfinger into the coffee mixture for 1-2 seconds and lay a single layer in a 9×13-inch dish.
- Spread half of the mascarpone mixture over the ladyfingers, then repeat with another layer of soaked ladyfingers and the remaining mascarpone mixture.
- Cover with plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours or overnight.
- Before serving, dust the top with cocoa powder and add dark chocolate shavings if desired.
