Description

Char Siu Chicken is a sweet and savory Asian BBQ delight made with marinated chicken thighs, perfect for grilling or baking.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken thighs
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup hoisin sauce
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon five-spice powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 green onions, sliced (for garnish)
  • Sesame seeds (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, hoisin sauce, honey, rice vinegar, brown sugar, sesame oil, minced garlic, five-spice powder, and black pepper until well combined.
  2. Add the chicken thighs to the marinade, ensuring they are fully coated. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or preferably overnight for maximum flavor.
  3. Preheat your grill or oven to 400°F. If using a grill, lightly oil the grates to prevent sticking.
  4. Remove the chicken from the marinade, reserving the marinade for basting.
  5. Grill the chicken for about 6-7 minutes per side, or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F. If baking, place the chicken on a lined baking sheet and bake for 25-30 minutes, basting with the reserved marinade halfway through.
  6. Once cooked, remove the chicken from the grill or oven and let it rest for 5 minutes before slicing.
  7. Garnish with sliced green onions and sesame seeds before serving.

Notes

  • For a spicier version, add 1-2 teaspoons of sriracha or chili paste to the marinade.
  • Serve with steamed rice and stir-fried vegetables for a complete meal.
  • Alternatively, use the marinade on pork or tofu for different protein options.
