Description

A delightful pastry filled with apples and topped with a sweet vanilla glaze.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon instant yeast
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 medium apples, peeled, cored, and diced
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (for glaze)
  • 2 tablespoons milk (for glaze)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (for glaze)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, salt, and instant yeast. Mix well.
  2. Add the cold, cubed butter to the flour mixture. Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, cut the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the sour cream, milk, egg, and vanilla extract. Pour this mixture into the flour mixture and stir until just combined.
  4. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently until smooth, about 1-2 minutes. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
  5. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  6. In a small bowl, mix the diced apples, cinnamon, brown sugar, and walnuts (if using). Set aside.
  7. Roll out the chilled dough into a rectangle, about 1/4 inch thick. Place the apple mixture down the center of the dough, leaving about 2 inches on each side.
  8. Cut slits along the sides of the dough, about 1 inch apart, to create flaps. Fold the flaps over the apple filling, alternating sides to create a braid effect.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown.
  10. While the kringle is baking, prepare the vanilla glaze by whisking together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  11. Once the kringle is done baking, allow it to cool for a few minutes before drizzling the glaze over the top.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, substitute half of the butter with cream cheese.
  • For a fun twist, try adding raisins or cranberries to the apple filling.
