Description
A delightful pastry filled with apples and topped with a sweet vanilla glaze.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon instant yeast
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 1/4 cup sour cream
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 medium apples, peeled, cored, and diced
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
- 1 cup powdered sugar (for glaze)
- 2 tablespoons milk (for glaze)
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (for glaze)
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, salt, and instant yeast. Mix well.
- Add the cold, cubed butter to the flour mixture. Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, cut the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the sour cream, milk, egg, and vanilla extract. Pour this mixture into the flour mixture and stir until just combined.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently until smooth, about 1-2 minutes. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a small bowl, mix the diced apples, cinnamon, brown sugar, and walnuts (if using). Set aside.
- Roll out the chilled dough into a rectangle, about 1/4 inch thick. Place the apple mixture down the center of the dough, leaving about 2 inches on each side.
- Cut slits along the sides of the dough, about 1 inch apart, to create flaps. Fold the flaps over the apple filling, alternating sides to create a braid effect.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown.
- While the kringle is baking, prepare the vanilla glaze by whisking together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Once the kringle is done baking, allow it to cool for a few minutes before drizzling the glaze over the top.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, substitute half of the butter with cream cheese.
- For a fun twist, try adding raisins or cranberries to the apple filling.
