Description
A delicious and decadent dessert made with cubed bread, diced apples, and a creamy custard, baked to perfection.
Ingredients
Scale
- 3 cups cubed day-old bread (such as French or Italian bread)
- 2 cups peeled and diced apples (about 2 medium apples)
- 1 cup milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 3 large eggs
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup raisins (optional)
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter.
- In a large bowl, combine the cubed bread and diced apples. If using raisins, add them to the mixture.
- In another bowl, whisk together the milk, heavy cream, eggs, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
- Pour the liquid mixture over the bread and apple mixture, gently folding to ensure all the bread is soaked. Let it sit for about 15 minutes to absorb the liquid.
- Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish and drizzle the melted butter over the top.
- Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Allow to cool for about 10 minutes before serving.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, consider adding a pinch of nutmeg to the custard mixture.
- You can substitute the apples with pears or berries for a different fruit variation.
- Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of caramel sauce for an indulgent treat.
