Description

A delicious and decadent dessert made with cubed bread, diced apples, and a creamy custard, baked to perfection.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups cubed day-old bread (such as French or Italian bread)
  • 2 cups peeled and diced apples (about 2 medium apples)
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 3 large eggs
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup raisins (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the cubed bread and diced apples. If using raisins, add them to the mixture.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together the milk, heavy cream, eggs, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
  4. Pour the liquid mixture over the bread and apple mixture, gently folding to ensure all the bread is soaked. Let it sit for about 15 minutes to absorb the liquid.
  5. Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish and drizzle the melted butter over the top.
  6. Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
  7. Allow to cool for about 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, consider adding a pinch of nutmeg to the custard mixture.
  • You can substitute the apples with pears or berries for a different fruit variation.
  • Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of caramel sauce for an indulgent treat.
