Description

Hungarian Chicken Paprikash is a creamy and flavorful dish made with tender chicken thighs, sweet paprika, and a rich sour cream sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons sweet paprika
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional for heat)
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet or Dutch oven, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.
  2. Season the chicken thighs with salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper (if using). Add the chicken to the skillet, skin-side down, and brown for about 5-7 minutes on each side.
  3. Once the chicken is browned, sprinkle the paprika over the chicken and stir to coat. Pour in the chicken broth, bringing the mixture to a simmer. Cover and cook for about 30 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through and tender.
  4. In a small bowl, whisk together the sour cream, flour, and lemon juice until smooth. Gradually stir this mixture into the skillet, ensuring it combines well with the broth. Cook for an additional 5 minutes, allowing the sauce to thicken slightly.
  5. Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary. Serve the chicken paprikash hot, garnished with chopped parsley over egg noodles or rice.

Notes

  • For a lighter version, use skinless chicken breasts and reduce the amount of sour cream.
  • Add bell peppers or mushrooms to the skillet for extra flavor and nutrition.
